This will depend largely on your organizations programs and systems, but the fundamental requirements for the job are immutable a proven track record in accounting, data mining and analytics, knowledge of information technology, and Computer Assisted Audit Techniques using Excel. Its important to look for candidates who can go beyond identifying patterns and trends in data and make that data tangible by offering solutions and suggestions to help the company stay compliant and increase efficiency. The role of the internal auditor is evolving in many organizations. Its important to look for candidates who can go beyond identifying patterns and trends in data and make that data tangible by offering solutions and suggestions to help the compa ny stay compliant and increase efficiency.Soft skills are increasingly important for finance and accounting professionals, including internal auditors. Look for candidates who have demonstrated abilities in public speaking, business communication, listening and observing, persuasion, negotiation, critical thinking, team building and time management.Second, what interview questions should you ask? Most candidates will claim standard auditing skills on their resume. Verifying these bedrock skills can trip up some managers, but its still critical. Some abilities that a candidate may tout, such as identifying risk factors and solutions on deadline, require managers to ask follow-up questions and perhaps call one or two of the applicants references.Put together a set of behavioral interview questions that require the candidates to think on their feet and prompt them to cite specific examples of projects on which they worked that show an effect of hard and soft skills. One method might be to prepare sample work assignments and ask the candidate to write a constructive review, to offer suggestions for improvements and how the department might implement those suggestions. To assess a candidates time-management skills, you might present a scenario such as this You return from lunch to find a new project requiring a one-day turnaround on top of your current workload. How to Work for an Advertising Agency
How to Work for an Advertising AgencyHow to Work for an Advertising AgencySo, youve made the decision. Youve meakoranversd the pros and cons, and youve come to the conclusion that a career in advertising is right for you. The next step is following through on that decision, but that can be a lot harder than it sounds. Back in the fifties and sixties, it was relatively easy to get a job at a good agency and work your way up through the ranks quickly, if you had the talent. But these days, the competition is intense. There are schools devoted to producing highly-skilled art directors, copywriters, and account teams. There are graduates out there who have portfolios mora polished than those of agency veterans. And agencies are inundated with hundreds of applications from around the country, and the world, for one or two open positions. So, how are you going to get in? Whats your game plan? Here are 10 ways to get your foot in the door. Of course, you will have to have a body of work tha t appeals to the agency youre applying to, and the fortitude to keep on trying after every rejection (and there will be a lot). But, if you have the passion, and the staying power, you can do it. Internat an Agency For an ad agency, an pro domo is a win-win situation. Most of the time, interns are working for free, or minimum wage, yet they will be doing work that can generate large sums of money for the agency. Not only that, but its also a very easy way to test-drive potential employees, and grab the talented ones before another agency can scoop them up. So, if you have the opportunity to intern at a good shop, jump on it. Interning will help you get an in to the agency, but youll also be able to work in various areas you wouldnt otherwise. Speak up and let the agency know youre eager and willing to learn to get the most out of your internship. The experience you gain as an intern is invaluable and could lead to a permanent position. At the very least, youll get some great wor k for your portfolio, and the kind of hands-on experience you cannot get anywhere else. Take an Entry Level Position If you cant get a great job at an agency, just get a job. Period. Many people have successfully started their career in advertising by taking ANY job in an agency, and then working their way up. Dont be afraid to work outside of your job description. Get in there and learn everything you can. If youre unable to move up within that particular agency, you can still use that experience to get you a job somewhere else. Some people say that you will be looked upon as that employee who is only good enough for the mailroom, or the assistant to the building supervisor. Nonsense. If you have the skill, you will find a way to showcase it. Get friendly with the people who work in the departments you want to work with. Show them your ideas. Get under their skin. If an agency can hire someone who was homeless (that actually happened), they can hire from their own ranks. DoF reelanceWork If youre interested in being a copywriter or graphic designer, consider freelancing as a way to get into the business. Coming up with your own rates, your own campaign to advertise yourself, and approaching small businesses (and even agencies) are all tools you can use in your agency job hunt. You should have an online portfolio ready to go and be available to network like crazy. This is not only a great way to do a lot of networking, and build a portfolio of legitimate published work, but it gives you a wide range of projects and campaigns to hone your skills. One day youre working on ice cream, the next on credit cards or vitamins. And you get real discipline, real quick. Create Spec Ads SPEC ADS take two forms. First, they can simply be your version, or recreation, of a published ad. You might think that you can do better than a major automakers print ads running in your favorite magazine. Or your local barber shops newspaper ads might need some reworking. So, yo u do it again, but better. You can also do something completely off the wall, for products and brands that dont even exist. The purpose of spec work is to show your creativity, and how you solve problems. If your spec ad is good enough, it could go viral. When it hits thousands (or even millions) of views, either on YouTube, Tumblr, or some other format, the ad agencies will take notice. Contact Radio and Television Stations Many radio and TV stations have employees who specifically write commercials. They may also produce certain types of shows for the station. This is a great opportunity for you to get started in the business. Since most radio and TV stations dont pay very much for these types of positions, theres both a high turnover and an opportunity for people with little or no experience to break into the field. Unfortunately, a lot of the work done here is not going to be rewarding, creatively or strategically. The ads are formulaic, and the clients usually like them tha t way. Basically, its a patronizing scenario that spells out the benefit of the product or service, followed by multiple reads of the phone number or website. However, you may make some great contacts here that can lead to bigger and better opportunities. Get an Advertising Education Getting aneducation in advertisingdoesnt just apply to college students. If youre serious about working in an agency, you can learn a lot by taking a course. This doesnt necessarily mean you have to pack up and move to your closest advertising school. The Internet has given so many people the opportunity to learn about advertising and what it takes to make it in the business from the comfort of their own home. If youre currently employed in a different field of work, consider night classes or online lessons that can be done on a flexible schedule. Introduce Yourself to Key People If youre looking for a position on the creative side of advertising, send an email or write a letter to theCreative Di rector. Introduce yourself in a friendly, professional tone and give a brief bio. You may even go as far as creating your own social media campaign, or viral video. Be sure you find out who the Creative Director is and not just address your letterTo Whom It May Concern. You want to approach this person just as you would a friend so get their name and the spelling right. You can follow up in a few weeks with an additional letter or you can give the Creative Director a call. Justdont cold callthem first. Anyone in an agency is going to be busy and especially someone in a management position who is juggling many projects at once. Network, Network, Network This is one of those businesses that live by the rule, its not just what you know, its WHO you know. Sometimes, all that separates two very talented people is an association with someone in the agency. Dont be the one left behind because you dont know the right people. Look for opportunities to meet with people in your area that ar e actively working in the industry. Many cities have local advertising clubs that sponsor special events, educationalseminars, and professional workshops. Get out there and meet the people who could be your next potential employer. Try Working In sale or PR Its not exactly the same. Theres a big difference between advertising and sales, but being an account executive at a car dealership, for example, can help you bridge the gap between no experience and working in an agency. Its also a good way to meet people, improve your selling techniques, and find out your own strengths and weaknesses. PR and advertising are much more closely related, but again, theyre not the same. However, there is a lot of crossover here, and if you find a good, creative PR agency, you can be doing some very fulfilling and award-worthy work. Be Genuinely Enthusiastic Are you passionate about working in advertising? Really passionate? Are you a hard worker thats willing to commit to the job, even when t hat means youre working well past the typical 9-5? These are just some of the questions you have to really evaluate if you want to pursuea career in advertising. If you can honestly say, Yes, absolutely, then you need to convey that to a potential employer.Even in this day and age of hustle and bustle, employers are excited to see someone with genuine passion and enthusiasm. Theres a reason they got into the field and your energy is a reminder of that. People with a lot of experience have been beaten out of the job by someone with less experience but a lot of heart. Personality goes a long way.

Invite more folks to the party, just dont let them all in
Invite more folks to the party, just dont let them all inInvite more folks to the party, just dont let them all inYesterdays post discussed some of the findings of ur UK Solicitor Survey, as well as other diversity-related surveys conducted by The Lawyer and Legal Week. Some of the lawyers who took our survey commented on the limited number of lawyers of color at their firms, but seem to take it in relative stride. A litigator in the Birmingham office of Beachcroft LLP says his firm is welcoming, but as with all firms there is a lack of ethnic minorities beyond a certain level. Others express more concern. Remarks one experienced lawyer, Despite the fact we live and work in London I am always surprised at how few ethnic minorities are represented in the city. Some respondents attribute any shortage of diversity to application numbers, not lack of receptivity. The solution to this dearth in applications, suggests a lawyer at Denton Wilde Sapte (which solicitors ranked among the top 10 firms for minorities), is to extend recruitment to non-traditional academic institutions. An associate at Clifford Chance (No. 8 on the saatkorn ranking) agrees that broader outreach produces resultsAlong with the friendliness, I would say this is the other trait that stands Clifford Chance out from the rest. Although it does have a proportion of Oxbridge students, the majority of its trainees are the cream of the crop from universities such as Leeds, Manchester, LSE, Kings, Birmingham, Sheffield, etc, which helps the friendliness of the firm.In that context, its interesting to note that according to The Lawyers survey, nearly half (44 percent) of UK lawyers dont think law firms should reach out to less prestigious universities. At the same time, two-thirds of surveyed lawyers (67 percent) believe the best way to promote diversity within the industry is to encourage young people who normally would not have considered a legal career to become lawyers. So the idea seems to be to cast a wider net, but dont let anything unfamiliar filter through. At least, even if these newly inspired young people cant find any firms willing to hire them, they wont face the crushing debt that overwhelms many law school grads here in the States.Stay tuned for more on lawyers and diversity. posted by vera

Diversity and Inclusion at Google
Diversity and Inclusion at Google Below is an article originally written by Mistral Myers, Keyword contributor at PowerToFly Partner Google, and published on October 11, 2019. Go to Googles page on PowerToFly to see their open positions and learn more.Until I started working at Google in 2014, I had never been out at work. Now, less than five years later, everything is different Im an active volunteer leader in Googles LGBTQ+ Employee Resurce Groupa Googler-run, company-sttzeed organization that works to provide an inclusive workplace for LGBTQ+ employees, and partners closely with our Trans Employee Resource Group, which represents our transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary colleagues. As part of my role, Ive had the chance to engage LGBTQ+ Googlers across our global offices, speak publicly about being LGBTQ+ in the workplace and have even been able to share my perspectives and experiences directly with Google leadership. At this point, I can barely remember what it felt like to not be a visible, openly LGBTQ+ person at work. So its hard to imagine that before joining Google, I felt I couldnt come out at the office at all. As we celebrate National Coming Out Day and reflect on all of the progress weve made as a community, I am determined to remember this simple but crucial reality Openness matters. Community matters. Being able to be out at work matters. Googlers create signs supporting the LGBTQ+ community for the 2017 New York City Pride March.Prior to joining Google, Id spent time in a variety of industries, always under the careful, polite policy of evasion when it came to questions about my personal life. Perhaps I didnt need to be so secretive. I worked with wonderful, kind people, and though there were no explicit shows of support for LGBTQ+ issues from my workplace, Im sure most of my colleagues and managers wouldnt have taken issue with my identity.Still, for many LGBTQ+ folks, the fear of prejudice can nag at you, and cause you to hesitate even around the most well-meaning of coworkers. Some assume that with the ushering in of marriage equality here in the U.S., other kinds of inequality have disappeared and the movement is complete. But as many LGBTQ+-identifying people will tell you, critical challenges still remain, and it takes a conscious and dedicated effort to counteract their effects. Growing up in New Mexico, I got an early introduction to some of the challenges that LGBTQ+ people still so often face harassment, discrimination, violence. The understanding that being LGBTQ+ was unsafe was imprinted on me almost immediately, and that fear left a lasting mark. In each new city, from college to a job to graduate school to another job, I was reminded (often in not-so-subtle ways) that no matter what might change in the law or in popular culture, I should always be wary, always be careful. So I never took the chance. In so many important ways, restraining from bringing my full self t o work hurt my ability to be a good employee. Constantly worrying about slipping up and revealing that I had a girlfriend rather than a boyfriend prevented me from feeling fully integrated. It became an obstacle to forming the kinds of professional relationships that help company culture feel cohesive and supportive. Now, I realize how much I was missing. Today, Im part of a workplace with visible LGBTQ+ leaders, explicit shows of support for LGBTQ+ cultural moments and celebrations and broad encouragement to use what makes me different to create an environment of inclusion for my fellow Googlers. This journey has made me realize how much all workplaces can benefit from supporting their employees differences, just as much as they celebrate their collective unity. Im proud. I hope you are, too. Study Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life Balance
Study Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life BalanceStudy Shows Men Are Just As Stressed As Women In Achieving Work-Life Balance The startling results of an American Psychological Association study , indicating males are as conflicted as females, contradicts a commonly held belief that men dont stress over work-life balance. However, Krister Ungerboeck, a consultant for geschftsleben leaders, isnt taken aback by the fact that, despite public perception, both men and women have nearly identical levels of conflict in work-balance.Ungerboeck says men are dealing with the double whammy of feeling guilty for missing their kids lives and at the same time ashamed for bedrngnis seeming cutthroat enough at work. The former CEO of a struggling software company, which he expanded 3000%, Ungerboeck experienced at first hand the personal costs of stereotypical masculinity. That in-the-trenches experience enabled Ungerboeck to found CEO Growth , a coaching firm exclusively for the C-suite.Despite common expectations, Ungerboeck says that the lessons he learned in his own career about giving consideration to the family are just as important as any bottom-line wisdom. As important as it is to help CEOs and owners push business to the next level, says the father of two, it is equally important to help them gain perspective on the value of a personal life.Glassdoor Do you see men struggling with the expectation that they must live up to a stereotype of masculinity which the report indicates is outdated and toxic?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. Theres more of an expectation that men who are in the workforce, are going to put their job ahead of their kids, and their family. Theyre going to be the ones who work late. But the truth is a lot of us struggle with that. Men often feel they arent supposed to take a personal day when their kid is sick, so they dont.I think there is an element of cultural norms, where maybe its expected for a man to be abl e to stay late. When I welches a CEO, I welches probably unconsciously more flexible when a woman, even a woman executive, if she needed to do some things to go do things for the kids. There was an assumption about male and female roles.I think that that maybe puts a little more pressure on male executives, or men in the workforce, who dont get that flexibility. Add to that, if I were to look at the number of times that male executives came to me and asked for time off for their kids, it was significantly lower. Many executives had wives who worked, and I think thats theres also some cultural expectation that in a two-income family (even if they are equal earners) that matters of the family would fall more frequently onto the female.Glassdoor How do we change the idea of masculinity in the workplace? If these are untruths, how do we knock them down?Krister Ungerboeck The change really needs to start from the top-down. Bosses need to make it clear that they prioritize their own child ren and their own family responsibilities, and let their employees see that it is okay to leave work early sometimes if your child is ill or has a ball game. They also need to encourage employees to use their vacation days and to take regular breaks.Glassdoor But a lot of employees feel unsafe to take family time. How do you allay those fears, changing the amtsstube culture?Krister Ungerboeck Its the boss whose actions get amplified, right? So, if your employees hear you say, Hey, Im going to my sons baseball game. Im leaving the office at 430 today they know its safe for them to attend to their families too. ? Being clear with people, letting people know, and then setting an example that its okay to leave at 5 oclock is powerful.Glassdoor One of the biggest hurdles we all face is time. How do you handle all that time at work away from family?Krister Ungerboeck I have been guilty in the past of spending too much time working. I used to tell people that my longest day was 42 hours. We now know we have research that shows us that we dont function well in that kind of situation. You cant get good work done.Someone told me once that its actually the people who really should be respected are the people who are able to get the job done and achieve the business results in 40-50 hours, elend the people who have to take 80 hours to do the same level of results.Glassdoor Knowing from data that too many hours arent productive, have you changed your use of time?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. I dont think that Ive consistently spent more than 45 hours in the office in ten years. With emailing and phoning time (from home) its maybe 50 hours. It gets done and I have a better balance. I dont have all the stress and anger that built up when alfruchtwein my whole life was work.Glassdoor By managing your hours, but not lessening your productivity it sets an example, too?Krister Ungerboeck Yes, thats setting an example. Its how you treat your employees time that also sends a messag e. When I would call my executives on the weekend or in the evening I have told them to let the call go to voicemail. That way I can let them know if they need to return the call right away, or if it can wait until Monday. If its an urgent matter they know to call. I dont think that, probably for the last 10 years, I can think of a time that I would regularly call any executives outside of business hours unless it was urgent. And if you have urgent matters more than a handful of times per year, then you probably have a different problem in your business.Glassdoor This study makes the point that fathers want to be more involved with family than in past generations. Is that true from your experience?Krister Ungerboeck I think definitely, that compared to the baby boomer parents, my generation (in his early 40s) wants more involvement in our kids lives. A lot of the CEOs I coach want, of course, to improve professionally, but they want help with their personal relationships too.Glassd oor You refer to yourself as a Recovering Asshole CEO. Why did you change that toxic parte of your life?Krister Ungerboeck It was a combination of a couple things. Part of the change came about after one of those anonymous 360 surveys. It was part of a leadership program that I was participating in. I had been told that the more toxic the boss, the more data is needed. If 30 people are saying all the same things about you, its hard to ignore. I knew I had to change. In my case, the 360 survey crossed from business to personal. Before this survey, I thought, Im a different person at work than I am personally. But the data showed I was having the same problems at home. When you have toxic leaders, theyre probably carrying that over to how theyre raising their kids, or carrying over to how theyre communicating with their spouse. Probably better to catch that earlier, before you get divorced, or you find out you have adult children youre not connected with.Glassdoor Youre saying that wor king style can follow you home? That work and home are intertwined and not in a good way sometimes?Krister Ungerboeck Yes. You may be saying to yourself, Hey, thats whats gotten me successful as a CEO or a boss, but if you dont change that behavior then youre going to be passing these traits on to your kids. If youve got a lot of stress at work, you may be taking that home, to your spouse and kids Theres a fair amount of data that that stress and anger and frustration is contagious. By taking that frustration and anger home, it spreads to their family.Glassdoor How do you remedy that cycle of stress which has so much to do with a skewed idea of masculinity?Krister Ungerboeck This goes back to getting rid of that stereotype of masculinity. Probably one of the most impactful experiences I had with my executive team was when we actually went through a vulnerability exercise, where each of the executive team members shared. Half the people were crying because they were talking about t hings that were very powerful, from their childhood mostly. That brought the team together at a whole new level than we had before.Glassdoor How do you show vulnerability and honesty to your employees? What was their reaction?Krister Ungerboeck Ive gotten teared up in front of my employees. The first time I got choked up was probably about 10 years ago. I will admit that there were certainly some individuals who came to me and gave me feedback, that they actually felt that was inappropriate that I was emotional in front of employees. But just as many employees gave me positive feedback that they felt more connected.Glassdoor Was it men or women that made those negative comments?Krister Ungerboeck It was men. Frankly, I think the individuals who did that probably were just not comfortable with being vulnerable themselves. So, I took it with a grain of salt. Certainly, there are people out there who still subscribe to the CEO must not show weakness, but I think its better to be auth entic in the long run. ? Its hard to keep up that faade forever as a business becomes increasingly complex. It adds to the stress which bleeds into your home life.Getting rid of toxic masculinity starts from the top.
